I have an 8 inch ID rear vent wood burning stove which currently goes into a reducer down to 6 inches then to a 90 degree double wall pipe. None of this is properly connected which causes smoke to leak when it is initially starting up. My plan is to install a double wall tee in the proper 8 inch size with a reducer on top, taking it to the 6 inch ID required to go on out of the rest of the triple wall pipe that is currently installed. Is this the right way to approach this?.

    Answer:
Thank you for the photos. Switching to a tee in the 8 inch diameter may solve the smoking issue but making the connection with a reducer will likely require use of a custom adapter. It appears your installation is utilizing Class A chimney pipe inside the room which is not usually the normal setup. All that aside, some stoves simply do not operate well when reduced. The ideal setup is to use a 90 degree 8 inch tee out of the back of the stove, then use double wall 8 inch stovepipe up to the ceiling, then transition to the Class A chimney for the rest of the way. The stove can be transitioned down to the 6 inch existing chimney at the ceiling to save on costs with the initial vertical run of 8 inch pipe helping to rectify the smoking problem.
