    Customer Questions & Answers

I am thinking of buying a used Lopi fireplace insert. It has an 8" diameter flue. The owner says that he has used it for 25 years by just placing it in the fireplace with no pipe venting at all and with no creosote or other problems. I understand that this is against code (I live in NY). I also understand that it is okay to just run a short 3-4 foot piece like above up into the chimney. I have a masonry chimney (10" X 8" I think.) What do you think?

    Answer:
I have to say that I am surprised the previous owner was able to burn the unit in this way. Most inserts do not put off enough heat to the chimney to allow them to draft properly.

I would indeed recommend using a short section of liner to route into the chimney itself. By code, the liner must be long enough to extend into the chimney and terminate at the first clay flue tile. This will help to increase efficiency and ensure the unit will burn cleanly.
