    Customer Questions & Answers

Between a stainless steel and cast iron fireback, which one is the most effective? Which one provides the greatest amount of heat?
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on January 6, 2013

    Answer:
Both types have advantages and drawbacks. A stainless steel fireback is more effective at radiating heat into the room while the fire is burning, but does not offer any heat after the fire has gone out. They are also thinner and can warp over time.

Cast iron fire backs only radiate a small amount of heat into the room, but retain more heat and will continue to radiate it into the room after the fire has gone out. Because they are thicker, they tend to last longer and do a better job of protecting the brick behind them.

How far will this Copperfield stainless steel radiant fireback sit out from the back wall using the feet shown?
By eFireplaceStore on December 1, 2015

    Answer:
The legs shown are to be oriented so that the unused portion is facing forward beneath the fireplace grate. Depending on the angled slot you use, the fire back will be between 2 to 3 inches from the back wall.

    First time using a fireback

I purchased this item for two reasons. First to help protect the aging process of my 50 year old firebox. Too soon to know results. Second to provide reflective heat into the room. There is some added benefit, but not as much as I had hoped for. Maybe should have purchased a cast iron fireback instead.
    Cons:
Disappointed in amount of reflective heat.

    It is doing the job.

    it is doing the job.
    Pros:
Our Fireplace back wall is protected, and the heat is coming into the room more effectively.
    Cons:
Seems simple enough, yet it would have been nice to receive some instructions on how to set the fireback up on the brackets that came with it.

We have a wood burning fireplace. Since some of the large wood logs were falling back against the brick, we noticed slight lines in the brick giving in….so we bought this Radiant Fireback. We selected the 20" x 20". So far we are happy with it, it does protect the back wall, we do not use the legs as it makes hard to clean the ashes. It does need to be taken out and cleaned, as the fire gets it smoky and black, but that's life…. It does work protecting the back wall from cracking… and that was what we needed. We do plan to buy the grate with the blowers to get more heat into the living room.
    Pros:
Heavy duty protects the back wall and nicely reflects the fire.
    Cons:
    Has to be cleaned often.

We are quite please with our fireback. Although it does not reflect quite as much heat as we had hoped, we think a good part of this is because our ancient log set needs to be replaced. We expect to have much better heat distribution into the room when we correct this issue. The unit was easy to install and does add a very nice glow to the fireplace. We are glad we made the purchase.

Too small to radiate much heat

My fireplace is small so this was the largest fireback that would fit. After reinstalling the grate and fake logs in my gas-burning fireplace, there wasn't much of the fireback left exposed to do any good. In hindsight a fireback with side panels would be much better as the larger surface area would reflect much more heat.
    Pros:
The quality is very good. It is heavy and the foot brackets allow various adjustment.
    Cons:
Too small to reflect much heat in my small fireplace.

    Pros:
    reflects heat easy to install
    Cons:
wish there were more sizes...could have been a little wider

After having to replace my back refractory panel, I read that firebacks not only projected more heat but also protected the back panel. The price for this steel unit was right so I decided to give it a try. At first i was put off by the shiny stainless steel, however; the fire soot soon darkened the surface. The stands work well and there is no danger of the fireback tipping over. The steel is a thick guage and the edges are beveled to reduce the buckling caused by the heat of the fire. Even with the edge bevels, there is a some buckling to the fireback. It is easy to see by the fact that the support stands are no longer parellel. This occurred after the first extended fire. I suppose the general function of the fireback has not been impacted, and the buckling has not gotten worse over a winter of fires, however; I may go with a thicker cast iron fireback. Don't get me wrong, the fireback is sturdy and should last for several years, and, given the price, is better than not having anything. Also it does put out noticeably more heat.
    Pros:
    Price, fast delivery, customer service
    Cons:
Slight buckling after an extended fire

I wanted to get more our of my fireplace. After reviewing articles and many statements on the internet I decided to purchase the Copperfield stainless steel radiant fireback. It was shipped well, very easy to install and I noticed the improvement immediately. I can feel the heat from much further away now, which is exactly what I wanted. It will also protect the rear wall of my fireplace, which is almost 100 years old. I'm extremely happy with my decision and the product I purchased from here and their superior service. I would recommend doing business with them and the product itself anytime. Thank you
