We are trying to figure out whether the height of the flame and thus the heat output is adjustable during use on this model and how do you do that?
This model does have adjustable flame height, which allows for variable heat output. The flame adjustment is located behind the bottom louver on the gas control valve.

Is the barrier screen of this Empire fireplace made out of tempered glass?
No, the barrier screen itself is merely a black mesh screen that is installed in front of the solid tempered glass panel that is part of the fireplace itself.
