We have a large wood hearth electric fireplace. Can the hearth be kept and converted with a propane insert, preferably ventless?

Answer:
It seems like you can indeed achieve this swap, provided the vent-free unit you install into your hearth has the proper clearances met that are called for in its owner's manual. For more information, you can reply to this email with the dimensions of your opening once the electric unit is removed, and we may be able to suggest a vent-free unit to install in its place. Please note, it is likely that you will need something custom made to frame the vent-free unit into your existing opening. By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on March 12, 2012
Answer:
Generally, it is not allowable to use a wooden hearth in front of a gas fireplace insert. Most models require 8 to 14 inches of noncombustible material in front of the insert before any combustible material can be used.
This of course depends on the insert that you would like to utilize. The model listed here requires a minimum of 12 inches of noncombustible material.
