Do you have to put some kind of mantle on this fireplace, or can it be used just as is?
By Tyler M. - Fireplace Specialist on November 6, 2012

This fireplace can either be installed into a wall or a mantel cabinet, such as the Empire EMBF8S Standard Wooden Mantel Cabinet with Base or the Empire EMBC8S Corner Wooden Mantel Cabinet with Base.

I have a Monessen vent free propane gas log fireplace. I converted my wood burning fireplace to this propane gas log a few years ago. It works well but I would like to add a blower to it to provide fan-forced heat outward rather than directly up.

Right now I use a ceiling fan to better distribute the heat through the room. I would like to add a glass fireplace enclosure and blower to the system. However, I don't need to purchase the gas logs and millivolt system. Wherever I look, I see the gas logs included.

The fireplace measures 41 inches wide in front and narrows to 25 inches in the back. The depth is 15 inches and the height is 20 inches. Can you help with recommending an insert and blower system?
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on September 24, 2012

    Answer:
While Monessen does make some gas log systems, they do manufacture a majority of vent free inserts, which include the burner system and the blower assembly.

I assume by your description that you purchased just a Monessen gas log set and installed it into your existing wood burning fireplace. If so, is the fireplace a masonry unit or metal? The blower would need to be installed into the fireplace itself, but that will depend largely on the model.

Does this unit come with everything you need to connect it to an existing propane gas line?
By Tyler M. - Fireplace Specialist on February 15, 2012

    Answer:
Yes, this unit comes equipped and ready to accept a propane gas line. The gas line inlet on this unit is 3/8".

    By Chris C. on December 10, 2015

Is this fireplace legal for Butte County, California? If so, does it have a UL number?
    By Brennan W. on March 7, 2016

    Answer:
As this unit is vent free, it is not approved for use in California.

By Dino from Selbyville, DE on December 10, 2013
Is a remote control available on this model?
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on December 10, 2013

    Answer:
This version of the Vail fireplace has a thermostatic valve and is not remote compatible. The remote compatible version of this unit is the Vail Premium Vent-Free Propane Fireplace with Remote Ready Controls - 36" - VFP-36-BP30LLP. The blower and remote must be added separately. The blower is the Empire FBB-4 Variable-Speed Fireplace Blower with Temperature Switch - FBB-4 and the remote is the Empire Battery-Operated Remote Control - FRBC.

We've had our Empire Vent-free fireplace approximately 2 months now and it has done exactly what we needed it to do. We bought it as back-up heat for our basement in case the power ever went out and we were gone. So far, that has not happened, but we just got back from vacation and set it on low as back-up for our furnace. While we were gone, temps dropped to -18 below zero and 14 inches of snow was on the ground when we arrived home. Our home was toasty warm upstairs and downstairs. Kudos to our Empire fireplace.

We ordered our fireplace on a Thursday and it was delivered the following Tuesday. The delivery man was very helpful in assisting us with it. When it was unpacked, we were more than pleased at the appearance of the fireplace. When it was all together and hooked up, we turned it on and it was just like being in a cabin in the woods with a real fireplace - so cozy. We are very pleased with the quality and the service from this seller. I would definitely recommend it my friends.

This unit is doing a great job for the space we installed it in. The room is 20 x 30 and heats up nicely. The flames are nice looking and the fire is quiet. The fan included does not blow as well as others I have seen and is also a little noisy, but I've seen other units that the blowers are much more noisy than this unit. Installed the unit ourselves without any issues. The directions could be written a little better.
    Pros:
Stock unit looks good and works well Flames look nice
    Cons:
Noisy blower Accessories look cheap so we did not install the optional doors The blower is temperature activated. I did not see that in the directions so when we first started the unit we thought it eas not working.

Looks great and works very well.

Well made unit. Installation is straight forward. Could use some better instructions for the burner unit regarding remote control options. Looks great when finished with optional trim kits.
    Pros:
Easy install, looks great, see through design.
    Cons:
Installation of extruded outer frame is difficult and wimpy using supplied hardware. I drilled and countersunk some holes in the frame and used sheet metal screws to attach firmly.
