We currently have gas logs in our masonry fireplace which need to be run with the flue open. We are looking for ways (other than switching to a direct vent unit) to increase the heat production of the unit and are interested in the Grate Heater for Vented Gas Logs. Can you please explain how this unit works? How do you get heat without carbon monoxide/fumes? Are these generally liked? Why are they not used more often? Also, where does the unit get plugged in? Do we need a 110V outlet in the fireplace?

The grate heaters are an excellent way to force heat into the room, however reception to them has only been lukewarm. Their mechanical appearance have kept sales from being high, but they are well made products that do their job well.
The grate has a heat exchanger tube just below it that connects to an air exchanger in the front of the unit. Air is pulled from the room and forced around the network of tubes, then forced back out into the room. The draft created by the movement of the heated air is not strong enough to overpower the chimney draft. These heaters are most effective when used in conjunction with a set of doors, as the doors will limit the amount of air being pulled out of the room when the logs are operating. You will indeed require a 110 volt power source in or near the fireplace.
