I would like to make my fireplace, which has a marble outside, to look more traditional than contemporary. Can I just put a mantel in front of it? Can they just be glued onto the wall?

A mantel can indeed be overlaid onto the surface of the surrounding tile. Construction adhesive can be used to secure the mantel shelf and legs into position, if you do not have a way of securing the included wall cleat.

Just a question regarding the inside of fireplaces. Years ago fireplaces were tiled with beautiful hand painted tiles. Does anyone do that kind of work anymore?

While I am unaware of any prefabricated fireplaces that use this styling, we do offer the ceramic tile sets designed for use within Valentine Fireplace Combinations and Victorian-Style Lion Fireplace Inserts. I have provided links to them below.
