No, a one-sided fireplace insert should not be installed inside a two-sided unit unless the other side is appropriately sealed off and enclosed.

An electric fireplace can be installed within an existing wood-burning fireplace as long as there's a nearby electrical supply, such as an electrical outlet within the firebox of the existing fireplace.

If you are using an insert that protrudes out of the firebox slightly, then as long as there is room for the fan you can place one on top and it would work well.

About Fireplace Inserts

If you are interested in changing the look of your fireplace but do not want to start over from scratch, a fireplace insert may be a good option for you. Fireplace inserts are great for people who have an open masonry wood burning fireplace and want to upgrade to a gas or continue to burn wood with much greater heating efficiency. Also, the installation of an insert is much simpler than installing a brand new unit and venting system.

So many people choose this option when they want a low maintenance fireplace or want to switch to models that are better at providing heat than the traditional wood burning fireplace. So, if you are looking for an affordable, high efficiency option, check out our selection of fireplace inserts and see which one is right for you. See our Fireplace Insert Buyers Guide for more info.
