    Customer Questions & Answers
By Steve from Brecksville, OH on March 28, 2012
I have an existing wood burning firebox made of steel and vented outside. Can I use a fireplace insert? Or does it need to be masonry?
By Tyler M. - Fireplace Specialist on March 28, 2012

    Answer:
The Timberwolf TI-2201 insert can be installed in either a masonry fireplace or a factory-built fireplace that is listed per UL 127 (U.S.) or ULC S610 (Canada). For more information, please see page 12 of the owner's manual, which you can download on the item page for this insert.

By Amy from Millboro Springs, VA on August 10, 2015
How far back is the exhaust pipe from the front this Napoleon Timberwolf EPI22 EPA wood burning fireplace insert? Also, is it round?
    By Kevin E. on August 11, 2015

    Answer:
The flue outlet on this insert is 6" round. It is approximately 13 1/2" back from the front edge of the insert.

By Aaron from Orangevale, CA on September 30, 2015
If this non-combustible Napoleon Timberwolf EPI22 EPA wood burning fireplace insert with flashing is more than 1/2" thick, is the hearth clearance still 22" or is it less? If less, how does the hearth clearance change per inch (or whatever increment is used) greater than 1/2" and what is the least it could be no matter how thick the hearth is?
    By Brennan W. on October 1, 2015

    Answer:
Unfortunately, regardless of the thickness, the hearth extension must be 22".

By lavisa from Renton, WA on September 17, 2014
How much more is it to have the insert put at the top of our driveway, it is a 10 -1 ratio? Also is there tax added?
By eFireplaceStore on September 18, 2014

    Answer:
Sales tax will not be applied if an item is shipped to your location. Unfortunately, the freight company is not liable to bring the shipment beyond the curb or roadside. Arrangements will need to be made to move the shipment up the driveway.

By Mark from MA on November 13, 2015
Can the power cord of this Napoleon Timberwolf EPI22 EPA wood burning fireplace insert with flashing exit to the left side? Our only electrical wall outlet is on the left side of the fireplace when looking at the fireplace.
    By Tyler M. on November 13, 2015

    Answer:
The electric connection enters on the right side of the blower housing for this model. The connection could be reversed to the left side by drilling a new hole in the housing and using the plastic strain relief fitting that comes with the blower. However, there would be a hole remaining on the right side of the housing.

By Mike from Guntersville, AL on October 5, 2015
How much does this Napoleon Timberwolf EPI22 EPA wood burning fireplace insert with flashing weigh?
    By Brennan W. on October 6, 2015

    Answer:
    This unit weighs 328 pounds.

By Ray from Stafford, CT on October 27, 2013
Why do you put a SS liner in an existing chimney that you already burn wood in when installing a wood burning fireplace insert?
By Tyler M. - NFI Certified Specialist on October 28, 2013

    Answer:
The 6" diameter stainless steel liner is required due to the efficiency of these woodburning inserts. The flue must maintain a 6" diameter from the insert to the top of the chimney for proper draft and venting. Dumping the flue gas into a larger existing chimney will create problems maintaining a good wood fire, so it is required by the manufacturer to have the 6" liner installed.

By Matthew from CO on November 27, 2015
Where does the electrical outlet of this Napoleon Timberwolf EPI22 EPA wood burning fireplace insert with flashing need to be located for the blower motors? Is an electrical outlet inside of the old masonry fireplace OK and safe?
    By Tyler M. on November 27, 2015

    Answer:
Yes, as the power cord from the blower can be run out from the insert, out through the flashing, and into a standard outlet in the room.

By Mohan from NJ on December 12, 2014
Are the electric connections on the left side of the blower? If not, can it be changed to the left?
By eFireplaceStore on December 12, 2014

    Answer:
The electric connection enters on the right side of the blower housing for this model. The connection could be reversed to the left side by drilling a new hole in the housing and using the plastic strain relief fitting that comes with the blower. However, there would be a hole remaining on the right side of the housing.

By Dave from Fort Worth, TX on June 28, 2015
I am building a house and I would like a fireplace that generates a fair amount of heat. Is this Napoleon Timberwolf EPI22 EPA wood burning fireplace a good choice? How do I install it into a new construction? Do I have to install a regular fireplace first?
By eFireplaceStore on June 29, 2015

    Answer:
This closed combustion style of wood insert will indeed be an effective heater for you, but as you mention, it requires the installation of a prefabricated fireplace in order to house the insert.

A better option for you would be to use a close clearance high efficiency fireplace. A popular model is the Flame Monaco XTD EPA Zero Clearance Wood Burning Fireplace. This unit is essentially a wood stove, encased within a metal chassis. This allows the unit to be framed into a standard 2 x 4 wall. This model has proven to be an excellent seller for us and is very well made.

By Mary from Huntington, NY on July 9, 2013
Do wood burning inserts only come in black? Do we have to have the large surround?
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on July 9, 2013

    Answer:
All wood burning inserts that we offer are available only in flat black. However, they could be painted with high temperature paint, if another color is desired.

The surround will be needed to cover the extra space around the insert, as it will not be a perfect fit into the fireplace. It is possible to have the surround cut down to a smaller size by a metal fabricator, should you wish it to be smaller.

By Cay from NC on November 23, 2014
Can an insert be put into a double wide mobile home fireplace?
    By Kevin E. on November 24, 2014

    Answer:
This insert can be installed into your existing fireplace assuming it's interior dimensions are appropriate and as long as the following conditions are met: the fireplace must meet UL 127, a full chimney reline pipe must be installed, any louvers or grills on your fireplace cannot be blocked by the insert's body or surround and a direct connection to the outside air must be installed on the insert.

By Calvin from North Carolina on October 9, 2012
Can this insert be installed where a prefab unit once was? If it is not a zero clearance unit, could you just brick the area where the old unit was before installing this one?
By Tyler M. - Fireplace Specialist on October 10, 2012

    Answer:
Unfortunately, no, this insert must be installed into an existing masonry/brick fireplace or a manufactured fireplace listed to accept this particular insert.

You will need a zero clearance unit to install a replacement. You may be interested in the Flame Monaco XTD EPA Zero Clearance Fireplace.

By Doug from Cleveland, OH on December 13, 2014
Is the extension from the fireplace opening adjustable? I'm looking for more cooking surface or an overhang of at least six inches.
By eFireplaceStore on December 15, 2014

    Answer:
The flashing on this unit is indeed adjustable to allow greater projection of the unit into the room. When fully adjusted rearward, the front of the unit projects approximately 6 inches, although the front 3/4 of an inch has a downturn.

By Liz from Denver on July 12, 2014
Is the hearth requirement of 18" from the rear of the opening or from the front? Also, what is the depth of the blower; i.e., how far out does it protrude from the base of the unit?
By eFireplaceStore on July 14, 2014

    Answer:
This unit actually requires a 22 inch hearth extension. The measurement is taken from the front of the unit, outwards from the steel plate the door assembly is attached to. The blower protrudes an additional 7 inches outward from the face of the unit.

By Neal from Sabina, OH on September 13, 2014
The opening on my fireplace is 48 inches wide 28 inches high. Will the cover surround fit in these dimensions?
    By Tyler M. on September 15, 2014

    Answer:
No, the flashing that is included with this insert will cover fireplace openings up to 44" wide and 32" high.

By Aaron from Sacramento, CA on October 22, 2014
Is this unit approved for use in California? Does this insert, and all of your wood inserts, include everything required to install ready for use (chimney pipe, etc.)? If not, what else will be needed?
By eFireplaceStore on October 22, 2014

    Answer:
This unit, along with all of the Osburn and Flame inserts we carry, does indeed meet the EPA Phase II requirements for California. The inserts do not include a chimney liner. A chimney liner kit, which includes the correct length of liner, an appliance adapter, top plate, and cap would be needed.

By William from Villa Ric, GA on January 25, 2014
Will this fit into a 36" pre-fab fireplace? If not do you have any units that will?
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on January 27, 2014

    Answer:
We do offer some models of inserts, including this model, that can potentially fit into the 36 inch size category of prefabricated units. However, I will need to know the depth, rear width, and height of your fireplace opening, as the sizing varies widely from unit to unit.

By David from Santa Fe, NM on October 22, 2015
Does this Napoleon Timberwolf EPI22 EPA wood burning fireplace insert with flashing have a self cleaning/air wash glass viewing area? What are the dimensions of the glass viewing area?
    By Tyler M. on October 23, 2015

    Answer:
This insert is indeed designed to keep the glass clean with an efficient, hot fire using quality firewood. Reasons for dirty glass would include insufficient fuel to get the insert thoroughly hot, using green or wet wood, or insufficient draft. Per the manufacturer, the approximate viewing area of the door of this insert is 17.5" wide, 9" high at the outside and about 11" at the peak.

By Kathy from Deptford, NJ on November 20, 2013
I noticed that the Napoleon Deluxe says it has an effective air wash combo with high temperature to keep the viewing glass clean. Does the Timberwolf have this?
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on November 20, 2013

    Answer:
The glass air wash system is a characteristic of all EPA stoves that use a secondary air system. The secondary air system creates a swirling effect of combustion gases within the firebox, keeping ashes and soot constantly moving so that they do not collect on the glass.

My fireplace opening is 26.5 inches high x 48 inches wide x 26.5 inches deep. Do you have a wood burning insert to fit these dimensions? How does the blower circulate air? Does it just blow around the room or can it be tapped into the heat ducts throughout the house? Can the average home owner install these or do I need to find a contractor?
    By Will M. on October 13, 2014

    Answer:
The wood burning inserts that we carry should only be installed in stone or brick masonry fireplaces that have stone or brick masonry chimneys. This configuration does not allow the ability to tie into existing duct work. The way an insert blower functions is by drawing in room air and circulating this air around the chassis of the insert to produce warm, heated air. There are closed combustion EPA certified fireplaces that we sell that offer the ability to close off the upper louver to redirect the warmed air into air ducts that can be tied into the plenum of an existing home A/C. Also, while a handyman that knows how to follow instructions would be capable of performing an installation for a wood burning insert, we recommend finding an NFI certified technician in your area by visiting www.nficertified.org. With this being said, I would recommend the Osburn 2400 High Efficiency EPA Woodburning Insert with Blower for the dimensions you provided.

My fireplace is small, 30 " wide at front but then angles back to only 17" at rear of opening. It is 18" high and 14" deep. Due to not having at least 25" at the rear, would this insert fit?
    By Will M. on June 14, 2016

    Answer:
This insert will not fit into your fireplace opening as the 14" minimum depth accounts for a 21 3/4" tall insert measuring 25 3/8" wide. The opening also does not meet the minimum height requirement of 22".

What are the dimensions of the glass viewing area?
By Tyler M. - Fireplace Specialist on October 12, 2012

    Answer:
Per the manufacturer, the approximate viewing area of the door of this insert is 17.5" wide, 9" high at the outside and about 11" at the peak.

The biggest viewing area we can offer for a woodburning insert would be the Osburn 2200 High Efficiency EPA Bay Window Woodburning Insert.

Is it possible to adjust the sensor to turn the fan on more frequently?
    By Will M. on December 13, 2016

    Answer:
It is not possible to adjust the thermal switch as it is designed to cycle the blower on at a set temperature. I recommend checking the positioning of the thermal switch to ensure this is properly positioned as this switch should only require surface temperatures of 120 degrees to activate the blower.

I just purchased a EPI22 wood stove insert but would
like the blower unit to blow out the heat at a higher rate
of speed. Is there more than one blower unit that could
    be placed on my stove?
By Tyler M. - NFI Certified Specialist on December 16, 2013

    Answer:
In addition to the two blowers that are included with this insert, you can add the Caframo Ecofan AirMax 812 Heat Powered Wood Stove Fan for installation on top of the insert for added heated air circulation.

What gauge of steel is this Napoleon Timberwolf EPI22 EPA wood burning fireplace insert made out of? Do all of the mounting brackets and hardware come with this wood burning insert?
    By Will M. on October 9, 2015

    Answer:
While the insert itself is composed of various gauges of steel, the top surface is manufactured from 3/16 inch thick steel plate and the flashing is approximately 18 gauge. The flashing will arrive with the hardware required for installation.

I have a 20' x 20' living room with no fireplace. Would it be possible to cut an opening in the exterior wall, build an exterior firebox/fireplace with a chimney, and build a mantle inside?
By Tyler M. - NFI Certified Specialist on November 22, 2013

    Answer:
While that is indeed possible, this particular unit is not suitable for your proposed application. This EPI22 is a fireplace insert, which can only be installed inside an existing fireplace. However, any of our zero-clearance woodburning fireplaces could be used in your project; please see our full selection here:

Features say it includes required flashing and trim. Then you have a adder for standard flashing and trim. Does it include the flashing and trim or not?
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on March 19, 2012

    Answer:
I apologize for the confusion on this. The flashing is indeed included on this item, however Napoleon assigns two different part numbers to the unit and the flashing. This is mainly for replacement part purposes.

In order for our system to assign both part numbers when you order, the flashing is listed separately on the drop down menu next to the unit. The pricing of the flashing alone is then added to the unit.

Please let me know if you have any other questions about the unit or the associated venting components.

Does the stove need clearance for expansion when hot?
By eFireplaceStore on March 9, 2015

    Answer:
The stove uses a double walled firebox design that limits outside expansion. The primary reason for the additional space requirement is for the stove to have a bit of wiggle room when being installed. This prevents the unit from getting stuck on uneven or jutting brick.

Would you recommend using a fire resistant insulation around this insert? I have read where some people have done this to make the insert more efficient. I will have some extra room above and to the sides of the insert.
By eFireplaceStore on January 15, 2015

    Answer:
While it is certainly an excellent idea to pack the damper area with unfaced insulation to prevent heat loss to the chimney, I do not recommend wrapping the insert itself. The insert does require some radiant heat loss from the top and sides to prevent warping of the steel over time. Insulating that top and sides could cause the unit to overheat, reducing the longevity of the unit.

Can the electrical cord of this Napoleon Timberwolf EPI22 EPA wood burning fireplace insert with flashing be placed on either side?
    By Will M. on September 24, 2015

    Answer:
The electric connection enters on the right side of the blower housing for this model. The connection could be reversed to the left side by drilling a new hole in the housing and using the plastic strain relief fitting that comes with the blower. However, there would be a hole remaining on the right side of the housing.

Can you get a larger surround to cover a 48 inch wide opening?
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on October 22, 2013

    Answer:
Unfortunately, the manufacturer does not produce a larger flashing that is compatible with this unit. Any extra space would have to be concealed by use of a custom fabricated backer plate that could be installed behind the flashing to take up the additional room.

I have an all-masonry fireplace with a standard masonry flue pipe. If I purchased this wood burning insert, would I need any venting components? Thanks.
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on February 17, 2014

    Answer:
In most instances, a stainless steel flex liner and insulation wrap will be needed. However, if your chimney flue is small enough, you may not require a full relining of the chimney.

Are the fans the same "Whisper Quiet" fans that come with other Napolean inserts? How does the noise level compare with fans from other brands? (I would like to buy an insert with the quietest fans possible).
*I read the previous question about the flashing, but I'm still unsure whether the price includes the flashing or if that needs to be added for extra money.
*Does the free shipping include delivery to the curb at my home?

By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on March 27, 2012

    Answer:
Napoleon does indeed utilize the same models of blower in their Timberwolf line, as they do in their other products. The blowers use high quality neoprene bearings and are positioned in manufactured housings that are designed to minimize the amount of audible noise. As a result, the blower assembly is very quiet, even when operating at full speed.

You are correct that the flashing will still need to be selected from the drop-down menu on the item page. This pricing is simply broken down from the entire cost of the unit.

The unit will come with free curbside freight shipping to any location within the lower 48 states.

Will this fit in a fireplace that is 19 inches deep, 24 inches high and 37 inches wide at the front of the fireplace, and tapers back to 25 inches wide at the rear?
By Tyler M. - NFI Certified Specialist on November 29, 2013

    Answer:
Yes, this insert will indeed fit inside your fireplace. If you do not have a brick/masonry woodburning fireplace, please be sure your model is tested and listed to accept an insert.

The Fireplace works great. Gives out lots of heat, self contained and burns the wood to down to nothing. The flashing needs some sort of anchor. I have a wide opening that it covers and it just sits on the outside. You can wobble it around and I would prefer it be anchored to the wall. That way I could seal up the area.
    Pros:
Lots of heat. Put in decent sized logs. Burns good.
    Cons:
Flashing needs to be better with some sort of anchoring to the wall.

Bought this unit last February while it was on sale and installed it in September. It was a very easy installation for 2 men, and went in with the chimney insert in less than 3 hours. This is my first Pa winter with the unit, but it already is much more efficient than my brick and mortar fireplace. It's not a suitable replacement for my largely ineffective heat pump, which should be outlawed above the Mason Dixon line, but seems to be an ok supplement. Although the heat pump still runs frequently when it's below 30 degrees outside and the thermostat is set above 64 degrees, hopefully this unit will help with the enormous electric bills I had last winter. I'm extremely disappointed with the blower fan. I have noticed it rarely turns on, and is not very effective. It's poorly designed, and mounts too far away from the insert surface for the thermostat to heat up enough for it to turn on. The fire has to be extremely hot for it to turn on, almost too hot to feed it wood. When it does turn on, it runs for a few seconds to a few minutes, them shuts off...not pleased at all, and if my rating was based on the blower alone it would be 0 stars.
    Pros:
Easy 2 man installation Aesthetically pleasing
    Cons:
Poorly designed and largely ineffective blower fan.

Recently purchased and almost finished with the installation. My only possible complaint is that the finish scratches ridiculously easy. The surround is already slightly scratched and may have even arrived that way.

So far easy to install yourself. No professional needed.
    Cons:
    Finish scratches very VERY easily

Had this insert installed about two weeks ago and I am still really learning how to use it. So far so great. It hasn't been very cold so, I have only used it a couple times but, it is so much better than the old insert I had! It's cleaner, sleeker and burns for a long time. It also looks great in my fireplace. The only reason I am hoping winter isn't over yet is so that I can use it some more!

This unit was installed in a 1950 Heatilator style fireplace. There were some clearance issues due to the old fireplace configuration and our inexperience. NOTE: leave extra room when you cut out the old damper and any pipes. We had to take the unit back out to re-cut more clearance to correct very loud expansion noises that would have damaged the chimney liner. The surround fit fine - screwed it into the flagstone in five places. We lit the first small fire, let the unit warm up, and added more wood. Even with the windows open, to vent the new burn-off odors from the house, it warmed the large room up just fine. Looking from outside there was almost no noticeable smoke coming from the chimney stack after start-up. The unit is very heavy and you must have a lift gate truck deliver it to curbside - then you will need your own appliance-type dolly to move it.
    Pros:
Unit looks great installed. Clean burning.
    Cons:
Very heavy - must have a lift truck deliver to curb side (not really a Con, but be aware.) and you will need your own dolly to get it into the residence.

We were a little skeptical about this unit based on the price point, but now that we've received this, installed it., and used it a number of times....... wow. Just wow. It is wonderfully efficient (as advertised), the warmth output is excellent, and the thermostat-controlled fan works fantastically. When the fan is on high, it is a little bit noisy for a modest-sized room, but their is plenty of flexibility/control with the fan speed. Also, the efficiency factor coupled with this unit being listed on the EPA website, we are exempt from wood-burning restrictions based on regional air quality guidelines. All-in-all, a phenomenal value.
    Pros:
Efficiency, thermostat-controlled fan, size (for both basic fireplace insert & actual burn area), ease of delivery & install.
    Cons:
    Very basic look (generic).
