How to Install a Fireplace: The Ultimate DIY Guide

    Customer Questions & Answers
By Guillermo from San antonio Tx on November 16, 2011
    1) Installation? Please elaborate.
    2) 10,000 BTU will last how many hours?
    3) How do you refill it)
    4) Insulation against heat/fire on wall?
    5) Risk of fire?
    6) Outside materials? Stainless steel or?
    7) Inside material? Ceramic or?
    8) To install it how difficult? 1-10

By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on November 17, 2011

    Answer:
This unit is very straight forward to install and only requires that you locate a pair of wall studs to secure the supplied wall mounting bracket in position. You would then attach the bracket, using the supplied hardware, then hang the unit onto the bracket.

The 10k BTU rating is simply the hourly output of heat this unit will produce. It will be able to heat a 250 square foot area, while it is operating.

The unit will need to be refilled by pouring a supply of biofuel into the fuel tray, after the flame has been extinguished and the unit has cooled down.

This unit is manufactured with an air space between the fuel chamber and the wall. The back of the unit stays cool and there is no risk of fire, as long as the unit has been installed per instructions.

The unit is manufactured from painted galvanized steel, except for the fuel tray, which is stainless steel. The face would also be stainless steel, if that option is specified.

This is a very new product and I do not currently list any dealers in your area that stock this unit for display.

I live in New York City. Is this type of fireplace okay for residential installation there? If not, are vent-free gas units allowed? And finally, can it hang under a shelf if the shelf is vented?
    By Dawn H. on December 21, 2012

    Answer:
We do not have information on whether you can install it in your area and advise you to check with your city hall or a building inspector. It can be installed under a shelf, but you must maintain a minimum clearance of at least 18".

Can this unit be inserted flush in a wall rather than outside, hung? What is the surround (framing) material? How long does the ethanol flame last without refilling?
By Tyler M. - NFI Certified Specialist on July 9, 2013

    Answer:
No, this model must be wall-mounted. It cannot be recessed or framed into an enclosure. This unit features a metal surround. When filled to capacity, this fireplace's ethanol tank will burn for approximately 11 hours on maximum input.

By Kim from Sangerville, ME on March 26, 2015
Is there any odor when this ethanol fireplace is burning?
By eFireplaceStore on March 26, 2015

    Answer:
Unlike vent free gas fireplaces, burning ethanol fuel is extremely difficult to detect. It is a good alternative to gas, if you have a sensitive nose or sinuses. However, the unit should be installed in a room with plenty of combustion air and openings to adjacent areas, as dispersal of the combustion byproducts is important.

By Georgia from Dover, NC on January 7, 2012
We are looking for a fireplace that can be recessed into a wall so that the face of the fireplace is flush with the wall. Will this fireplace allow that? We are building a new house, and want the look and feel of a fireplace without a chimney. We don't have gas available to our property so thought ethanol would work for us.
By Tyler M. - Fireplace Specialist on January 9, 2012

    Answer:
Unfortunately, you cannot recess this unit (or any of the Napoleon Ethanol Fireplaces) into the wall. It must hang on the wall, and it comes with the brackets and hardware included.

By Dave from Niagara falls on October 31, 2011
Hi can this be built directly into a wall?
    By Kevin E. on November 1, 2011

    Answer:
No, this unit must hang on the wall and sit proud of it. It should not take up too much room. In fact, the actual firebox is only about 6" deep

Can I use the glass rock around the frame of this fireplace?
By eFireplaceStore on February 9, 2015

    Answer:
Glass and ceramic stones can indeed be used on the metal plane that surrounds the fuel tray.

Is it safe to put a TV over this unit?
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on April 25, 2013

    Answer:
It is possible to mount a television above this ethanol fireplace, however the manufacturer recommends at least 2 feet between the bottom of the television and the opening of the fireplace.

By Randy from St. Simons Island, GA on February 9, 2013
What is the thickness of the steel firebox/jacket? What is the length of each of the burners? Are the burners stainless steel? Are there spacers at the rear mounting area? Is there insulation in the jacket?
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on February 11, 2013

    Answer:
The outer jacket/surround of the fireplace is made of 24 gauge steel and does not use insulation. There is a surrounding air space made into the 20 gauge firebox area that dissipates heat. Each burner measures 16.5 inches wide and is manufactured completely out of stainless steel. The mounting brackets do not have any additional spacers made into them.

Once hung on the wall, can a surround be built around this fireplace?
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on July 15, 2013

    Answer:
Because of the heat generated by this larger ethanol fireplace, a surround cannot be built around the unit. It requires 18 inches of top clearance, 12 inches of side clearance, and 2 inches of bottom clearance to cool properly.

By Andrew from Quebec, Montreal on September 15, 2013
What's the distance I should leave between the fireplace and an LED TV that I have hanging on the wall?
By Kevin E. - NFI Certified Specialist on September 16, 2013

    Answer:
This clearance is not specifically listed by the manufacturer. They do, however, recommend only 18" between the top of this fireplace and a combustible mantel or the ceiling. It would not be advisable to place your TV any closer than this to the fireplace. Also, you should consider that many LED and Plasma TVs have cooling vents located along their bottom surface. A low profile mantel shelf would serve very well in preventing heat from being pulled right into the bottom of your TV.

By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on February 24, 2014

    Answer:
When the red surround is selected from the drop down menu, the version you will receive is the WMFE3R, which will be the red color shown.

A correction to my earlier email: According to the manufacturer, this unit will burn for approximately 11 hours with a fully filled fuel tray, and on the maximum setting of 10,000 BTUs/hour.

By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on October 12, 2012

By Kevin E. - Fireplace Specialist on November 14, 2011

By Tyler M. - Fireplace Specialist on November 29, 2011

Can you add decorative crystals or crystallines for effect?

By John from PA on March 25, 2013
We purchased a linear ethanol fireplace. As the manual suggests denatured ethanol fuel we also bought the co-z fire denatured fuel. We filled the tanks and lit the burner. It seems to start to light and then goes out. We can not get it to stay lit. What might be the problem?
By Tyler M. - NFI Certified Specialist on March 26, 2013

    Answer:
According to the manufacturer, the CO-Z fuel you are using is not the issue. Please verify that the flame diverter is not fully closed on the unit, as this could be causing the issue. Please see pages 14-16 of the owner's manual for more information.

By Cathy from Pennsylvania on January 25, 2013
I want to purchase this fireplace in very near future. Can you use Bio-Ethanol fuel in this particular fireplace? I noticed this fire place states denatured ethanol. Not exactly sure what the difference is?

By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on January 25, 2013

    Answer:
Bioethanol and denatured ethanol will burn in essentially the same way. The only substantial difference is that denatured ethanol has added chemicals and dyes to make it undrinkable. This is mainly to discourage consumption of the product. Bioethanol is a pure form of the ethanol molecule and is usually clear in color. If this product is used, it is recommended to store it in a safe place when not in use.

I am a general contractor in California. Are these vent-free units approved for this state?
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on August 27, 2013

    Answer:
Unfortunately, no. Vent free units are not legal for use in California, Canada, and various cities in the U.S. Some states that previously did not allow these appliance, such as Massachusetts and New Hampshire, have recently legalized them. However, California does not appear to have plans to do so.

By Michelle from Santa Monica, CA on October 16, 2012
Can you install this type of fireplace in California?
By Tyler M. - Fireplace Specialist on October 16, 2012

    Answer:
It is highly likely that you cannot install it, as most jurisdictions in California forbid the use of vent-free appliances. We encourage you to check with your city hall/building inspector for more information.

Can I put a cultured stone or tile surround around this unit?
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on April 14, 2014

This fireplace will save you time and anxiety. I religiously check each appliance to make sure it is turned off, and sometimes worry that I overlooked something. Since this fireplace automatically shuts down when the fuel is gone, leaving it on by accident is no problem!
