Do you sell non-flammable mantel shelves?
By Will M. on April 20, 2016
By Joyce from Arizona on December 3, 2012
Our brick fireplace goes to the ceiling. We already have two holes drilled in the fireplace. The holes are 50" apart. Will we have a problem mounting this mantel?
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on December 4, 2012
Answer:You will need to drill additional holes in order for this mantel to be installed. The wall board that is used to mount the mantel is approximately 48 inches in length. As such, the existing holes cannot be used.
However, it is fairly easy to drill new holes in the mortar, using a masonry bit. The mantel shelf would then cover the existing holes when it is installed.

Does this come with or without the arch?
By Chris C. on July 15, 2016
Answer:The mantel ships with the arch included, but it is not required to be installed. Additionally, the corbels shown also do not have to be used, but they are included with the mantel as well.

I have a gas fireplace, and it has a shelf that's formed into the wall. Do you make shelves that cover the existing shelf, hollow in back?
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on May 7, 2012
Answer:Unfortunately, all of the shelves that we carry are designed to be mounted directly on the wall and do not have the ability to cover an existing mantel or surround.
Any type of surround such as this would need to be "boxed" construction and purpose built for your application. I highly recommend consulting a local contractor or cabinet maker for this type of need.
By Devin from San Diego, Ca on July 17, 2012
I am interested in the detailed dimensions, not just shelf width and height and depth. Do you have anything like that? For instance, the width of the lower portions.
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on July 18, 2012
Answer:I was able to obtain the following information from the manufacturer:
Corbel height - 6.75"
Corbel width - 6"
Bottom width - 52.5"
Middle of arch - 1" thick
Edges of arch - 4" thick
All measurements are the same, except for the bottom width, which is 64.5".

What is the best way to attach to cultured stone wall? This is new construction, and stone has not yet been installed.
By Kevin E. - Fireplace Specialist on May 8, 2012
Answer:These mantels are attached to the wall via a wall cleat. The wall cleat is screwed to the wall and the mantel then hangs from it. Since your wall is not yet finished, you have the opportunity to mount the wall cleat to the unfinished wall. Thereby, avoiding the need to drill into the cultured stone.

Is the unfinished mantel distressed, or only the cherry finished? Does it come as separate sections (shelf, corbels, arch), or is it all one piece?
By Will M. on February 12, 2016
Answer:The unfinished mantel is not distressed, and the only other option will be cherry distressed. The mantel will arrive with the shelf, corbels, and arch as separate pieces, as installing the corbels and arch is not required.

The face of my fireplace marble surround is exactly 5 feet wide. What size of this Pearl Mantels 495 Auburn fireplace mantel shelf should I order? I want it to look exactly like the photo on your web site.
By Chris C. on November 5, 2015
Answer:With your marble being 60" in width, the 72" model would give you the appearance of the imagery as shown on our website with the mantel shelf itself hanging from the marble on both the left and right hand sides.

Does the back side of the shelf have to be scribed & cut to match the uneven stone wall?
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on June 19, 2012
Answer:This particular shelf will come with a flat, wooden wall cleat that must be attached to the wall, prior to mounting the shelf.
In situations where you have an uneven wall surface, you will need to either flatten the wall or alter the mantel and attach it using alternate means.

I recently purchased this 60" Pearl Mantel 495 Auburn Fireplace Mantel Shelf. I had to return it because it did not fit on top of my fireplace correctly. I don't know if the 72" model would be too long for my fireplace either -- the length of the bottom of the mantel is not shown in the dimensions. The bottom of the mantel for my fireplace before the arch and corbels that would rest on the top of the brick would need to be 60". Is it possible to get this same Pearl Mantel 495 Auburn Mantel Shelf at the size I need to fit my fireplace?

By Will M. on July 5, 2016
Answer:This mantel is constructed of Asian Choi hardwood.
By Eric from Grantsburg, WI on November 11, 2011
I really like this mantel, my problem is that my fireplace is off center in the brick on my wall, but I need the mantel to match the width of the brick to look good. So, is it possible to have the bottom part of this mantel removed like in the attached picture? Is that even an option? If so, what would the height of the mantel be?
By Tyler M. - Fireplace Specialist on November 14, 2011
Answer:Unfortunately, that is not an option, as these mantels are only made as shown and there is no option for customization.
By Charles from Lebanon, OR on May 29, 2015

Our corner fireplace is floor-to-ceiling in red brick (painted white, 60"W). What anchors would you recommend to hold this with the wall cleat?
By Collin C. - NFI Master Hearth Professional on November 30, 2012
Answer:Ideally, you would use plastic masonry anchors to attach this cleat to the wall. Due to the size and weight of the item, ribbed anchors are recommended. It is also recommended to install the anchors into the mortar, rather than the brick, as drilling into the brick can be difficult even with a good quality masonry bit. Larger anchors, such as a #8 size, would be recommended. Follow the manufacturer recommendations closely for the number of anchors needed for the job.

I am interested in the Cherry Distressed finish (instead of finishing it myself). How would you classify the Cherry Distressed finish - is it gloss, semi-gloss, satin, flat, etc.?? Also is it a lacquer or a urethane or something else?? Thank you, John
How would you classify the Cherry Distressed finish on this mantel shelf? Would you say that it is glossy, semi-glossy, satin, flat, etc? Also, is it a lacquer, a urethane, or something else?
By eFireplaceStore on October 14, 2014
Answer:Per the manufacturer, the finish is a satin urethane application. The surface of the shelf is thoroughly prepared and a 12 step process ensures that the shelf is thoroughly covered and the finish hardened properly.

I am interested in the 48 inch length of this Pearl Mantels 495 Auburn fireplace mantel shelf. How much weight can the mounting system of this hold? I would like to place a large flat screen TV on it and it will fastened into the brick and mortar of my fireplace.
By Chris C. on October 29, 2015
Answer:After checking with the manufacturer, they have advised that the weight limit of the mantel will greatly depend upon the method in which the wall cleat is attached to the brick and mortar. I would suggest checking the weight limit of the hardware to be used in securing the wall cleat.
By Jim from MA on October 29, 2015
Answer:I just purchased the 60" version and haven't mounted it yet, but based on the mounting design it should have no problem supporting a flat screen TV as long as you use a good quality masonry anchor in your "brick and mortar". I like the Simpson Strong-Tie lead expansion anchors with a lag screw myself. The strength will have more to do with the quality and condition of the brick and mortar. Use the recommended size masonry drill bit and lag screws for the size anchor that you choose.
By Kim from MI on October 29, 2015
Answer:My husband was skeptical of the mounting system at first, but quickly realized how good it worked. I'm not sure how much your tv weighs but I love this mantel!
By Susan from NC on October 30, 2015
Answer:There is a very strong, sturdy cleat that is used to mount the mantel. Extra hardware could be added to the cleat if desired, but that probably wouldn't be necessary. I think the mantel can easily hold a tv - when following recommended installation.
By Alan from Arvada, Colorado on November 28, 2016
What is the height of the corbel? Is the 15" height referred to on the "dimension" sheet from the top of the mantel to the bottom of the corbel for the 72" mantel? Or is the that height of the corbel, or the height of the mantel without the corbel? If the top of the mantel is 10" deep, how deep (what is the measurement from front to back) is the bottom of the mantel?
Is this mantel, corbels and arch all designed to fit flat against the wall? How would you fit it over brick fireplace face that comes out from the wall 3.25"?
By Bob from Atlanta, GA on November 11, 2013
Does the 48" have corbels?
By Chris on November 11, 2013
Answer:The 48" model does indeed include the corbels.
By Janet from Las vegas on February 23, 2012
First question, how heavy is this? How is it hung?
By Kevin E. - Fireplace Specialist on February 23, 2012
Answer:This shelf has an approximate weight of 55 lbs. It is attached to the wall via a wall cleat. The wall cleat is attached to the wall with your choice of wall anchors. The shelf is then hung on the wall cleat.
