Please note that log lighters are meant to be turned on for a short period of time and only to ignite a load of wood. Once the fire is lit, the fuel should be shut of via the manual key valve located outside your fireplace opening and not left on. If used with a grate and gas logs alone for an extended period of time, quite a bit of soot may develop inside your firebox. This is a result of flame impingement or the log lighter flame touching the bottom of the gas logs and the subsequent incomplete combustion this causes. Gas log burners that are included with the complete gas log sets we also offer will be designed to where the flame is diverted around the logs with proper set up of the grate and with proper positioning of the logs. More importantly, the log lighter has not been tested in this fashion and may warp/leak when frequently left on for an extended period of time. I recommend simply removing the log lighter and purchasing the complete log set, including the burner to avoid this issue.
