While both types produce a minimal amount of byproduct, the infrared heaters tend to burn cleaner and release almost no detectable smell.

Generally, vent free logs will have a more sophisticated burner assembly that will allow them to operate without a vent to the outdoors. The burner is designed so that a specific amount of fuel is metered to each burner port. This allows the burner to use all of the fuel without releasing any byproducts to the room.
The log assembly must also be placed specifically in order to prevent direct blockage of the flame and the creation of soot.
