I have a gas fireplace. Are the grates the same for gas and wood?
They are not the same. Gas fireplace grates are specifically designed to work with the burner and logs for that specific fireplace.

Please given your reasoning on how a fire grate should be placed.
Per the grate manufacturers and fireplace manufacturers, they would recommend that the grate be installed with the wide area to the front of the fireplace to match the fireplace design (wider in the front than the back). This is designed to keep the majority of the heat towards the front of the firebox opening.
