An Attractive Installation

This chimney support box looked really professional when I finished installing it. It did not quickly, however, as I needed to up into the attic and install additional 2 x 10 framing between the 2 x 10 ceiling joists. The finished job in the attic side resulted in a framed square that I made 12 1/8" x 12 1/8" to provide some "wiggle room" for the support box. Once the framing was completed, I took my time carefully cutting through the 5/8" ceiling drywall, using the sides of this newly framed square as a guide. The support box then slipped smoothly through, and I clamped the sides of the box to the 2 x 10 framing until I verified that at least 2 inches the support box emerged from the ceiling on the living space side. I then used two #10, 1 1/4" screws to secure each side of the metal support box to the framed square.

Pros

Fairly simple unit to install, but doesn't exactly go quickly. Looks good coming through the ceiling after the trim frame is installed. Word of wisdom: Double check your measurements! What is measured on the ceiling in the room can be tricky to translate once in the attic.

Cons

The ceiling support box that I installed was about 1" or so too short, since my house has 2 x 10 ceiling joists, the box is only 11" high, and it requires 2" of the box to extend past the ceiling. I am going to have to cover the exposed wood in the framed square with equivalent sheet metal before I install the attic insulation shield.
