I have a Desa direct-vent fireplace that was installed 6 years ago. I'd like to know if this brick liner can be used to dress it up. The model # is VC36P and is obviously a propane model. The manual says that the brick liner is model # BL36DHA(SA).

While we do not stock the textured liner that you have specified, we do offer the standard (smooth) version. The liner is the Vantage Hearth 36 Inch Almond White Herringbone Refractory Brick Liner Kit for Direct Vent Gas Fireplaces.

Do you have to use a brick liner? Can I just have the black liner?

Almost every direct vent fireplace offers the brick liner as an option only and would not have to utilize this product. However, the only way to be certain would be to have the model number and manufacturer of the fireplace. If you are able to provide this information, I will be happy to check for you. This information can usually be located on the data plate, which is just inside the opening of the fireplace or in the bottom, under the firebox floor.
