After I connect the gas line to these Empire Vail Premium vent-free natural gas fireplace with remote ready controls (VFP-32-BP30LN), how do I light the logs?
    1 Answer
After the initial gas connection and purging of the gas line, the following steps will need to be followed to light the unit initially: 1. Lower the bottom louvers on the unit and locate the gas control valve. The valve will have a control knob labeled "off", "pilot", and "on". There will also be a rocker switch nearby labeled "off", "on", and "remote". Lastly, locate the push button piezo ignitor button. 2. Rotate the control knob on the gas valve to the "pilot" position. Push in on and hold the control knob, while simultaneously pushing the piezo ignitor. 3. Observe the pilot assembly and look for ignition. Once the pilot is lit, continue to hold the control knob for another 30 seconds. 4. Release the control knob and give the pilot a minute to warm up. After a minute, you can rotate the control knob to the "on" position. 5. Press the rocker switch to the "on" position and the main burner should light. After these initial steps are completed, you can leave the control knob on the gas valve in the "on" position at all times. If you do not have a wall switch or remote, the rocker switch will be used to control the unit. You can simply turn the switch to "off" anytime you want to shut the unit down.

    Good value
We got some quotes to put in a fireplace and it was way out of our budget. Being a DIY kinda guy, this was the option I settled on. The booklet is pretty clear regarding placement and requirements and I talked with some local contractors to be sure. I framed up the fireplace and hired someone to run the gas line. Being vent-free, I don't have to hack any holes through an outside wall. If you don't get a blower, then technically you don't have to run any power either, but running it was easy with an outlet being right next to where we were putting it. Now all I need to do is have a mantle put on and put some ledge stone on the front and we'll be ready for winter! Happy with the appearance and heat output and glad that we'll have heat in case of a power outage.
ProsStraightforward installation No power needed turn on

    Excellent Value
Good price for a quality unit. Easy install and set up. I see no advantage to the higher priced units that are comparable.

Vail Premium Vent-Free Propane See-Thru Fireplace
Well made unit. Installation is straight forward. Could use some better instructions for the burner unit regarding remote control options. Looks great when finished with optional trim kits.
ProsEasy install, looks great, see through design.
ConsInstallation of extruded outer frame is difficult and wimpy using supplied hardware. I drilled and countersunk some holes in the frame and used sheet metal screws to attach firmly.
