10-20% is considered ideal. We have a wonderful article that talks all about seasoning wood!

My moisture meter says some oak cut a month ago is 18% water. Is that reasonable or is the meter reading incorrectly?

I would re-split a section and re-test the fresh split face. That seems very quick to season to 18%.

About Wood Moisture Meters

Testing wood for its moisture content is easy with a wood moisture meter. Sometimes it's hard to determine whether the wood is too wet to burn, which can result in an abundance of smoke and soot - not a healthy or clean situation which is why is great to get a moisture meter for wood. A moisture meter, when stuck into the wood, the four sensitive prongs accurately test the moisture content and give you a reading on a bright LCD screen. These convenient devices come with a carrying case, 9v battery, and instructions. Wood, with the proper moisture content of 15 to 20%, will burn the best.
