I recently bought this product from you all. I like the outer design but I didn't know the shanks were going to be so short. When you receive these as bought, the andiron is merely decorative and doesn't give horizontal support for wood. Do I need to buy the Pair of Long Andiron Shanks in Black for Use with A-9122 and A-5817 Ball Andirons to accomplish this?
As shipped, the andirons are indeed for decorative purposes. The manufacturer, has advised us that the extended shanks will not fit the A-1234 andiron set, as the shanks are square in shape, as opposed to the flat design of the model you have. The only option would be to have a set of custom shanks made out of flat mild steel. I apologize that we do not have shanks to fit this product.
One of the reviews mentioned the coating coming off after only a few fires. Is this true? If so, is there anything that can be done to prevent it, and if not is the metal underneath the same color as the version shown in the picture?
We have indeed had a couple of reports of this issue, but it has largely been attributed to the andirons being used with a very large, hot fire. If temperatures regularly exceed 750 degrees, it can indeed cause the coating to separate over time. The metal beneath is a dark grey iron casting.
I have gas logs but your previous answer discourages the use of these andirons with gas logs. Why would you be hesitant to use them?
The andirons can be used in a fireplace with gas logs, just as long as the unit is not a direct vent fireplace, as mentioned in the previous answer. The reason the andirons are discouraged for use in a direct vent unit is due to the fact that the andirons are not able to be secured to anything within the fireplace and the floor of a direct vent fireplace is usually not flat. As such, the andirons could tip over and damage the glass or logs inside the fireplace.
