Replaced battery in the remote. Worked fine, but now remote will not turn the unit on or off, but the unit can be turned on and off manually. What can I do to fix this?

If you've only replaced batteries in the remote, please also replace the batteries in the receiver.

Do these allow most of the heat to go up the chimney?

If you have a vented fireplace to use as the unit where this will be inserted, then some of the heat will go up and out of the chimney like it would with wood burning in it.
