* Fireplace Size Requirements: The fireplace's Middle Width must be at least 22 Inches and the Depth must be at least 10 Inches for this gas log set to fit. You can calculate the middle width of your firebox by measuring the width (left to right) approximately half way back in the firebox. I have an old house the fireplaces no longer work. Will vented work or do I need ventless?

If the chimney is no longer functional/safe for burning wood, then, yes, perhaps a ventless option is your best bet.

What is this used for?

This product is designed for wood burning fireplaces that do not offer adequate depth or width for more traditional vented gas log sets to safely fit. Since smaller wood fireplaces are common in Victorian homes where these smaller fireplaces were once functional coal burning fireplaces, the style would match the aesthetics of the home. This same produce is also available with a decorative log set instead of coals.
