How is a direct vent fireplace different from the rest?

A direct vent fireplace is best described as a vented gas fireplace with a sealed glass firebox. Because of its venting and setup, it is super efficient for heating. Coaxial pipes draw air from the outdoors for combustion instead of sucking air and heat out of the room you're sitting in.

I have a direct vent fireplace and am disappointed with the fireplace as the flame is so small. Can I buy a vented log set and replace it with my direct vent log set?

Unfortunately, no.  Direct vent systems are engineered only for the log set that is included with it and they have integrated burners.  The burner cannot be replaced; vented gas log sets are intended for installation only inside brick/masonry fireplaces or appropriately-listed manufactured woodburning fireplaces.
