How to clean stone fireplace mantel?

Smoke is absorbed by porous stone. Removing ¼” of stone will get it clean the hard way. If the stone is stained with smoke from the fireplace, Paint’n’Peel® may be the best option. It is most effective on stone that does not have crevices where the material will get stuck when peeling. It is more effective than pressure washing or sandblasting and much less messy. Because it can pull some of the stains out of the stone, it is much simpler than trying to remove the top quarter inch of stone.
