I have an 8-year-old Rheem heat pump system with an R410A refrigerant. The compressor in my condensing unit is making strange noises, and I'm considering the MRCOOL 4-ton, 48K BTU ProDirect Heat Pump Condenser as a replacement since it also uses R410A refrigerant. My understanding is that the thermostat controls both the air handler and the condensing unit, and they don't directly communicate. Will the MRCOOL condenser unit work as a replacement for my Rheem condensing unit (Model RP1448AJ1NA, 14 SEER)? Replacing only the condenser would be easier than a full system change-out, especially with the attic air handler located in the Texas heat.
While your Rheem unit and the MRCOOL 4 Ton 15 SEER ProDirect Heat Pump Condenser both utilize R410A refrigerant and are 4-ton units, they are not compatible replacements for each other. MRCOOL units, particularly from different product series like the ProDirect, are designed as matched systems and are not cross-compatible with other brands or even different MRCOOL series.
