Potentially, but using a trivet like the Minuteman C-33BB 7" Sunburst Cast Iron Trivet - Enamel Blue Black should help prevent any rust.

Do you need to season it before just filling it with water and putting it on the wood stove?

While it is not necessary to do, it is recommended to season the humidifier with linseed oil, prior to its first use. This will create a hard protective film on the inside of the kettle, slowing the effects of corrosion.

Cast Iron Humidifier
It matches our wood burning stove and puts out a lot of steam keeping the air moist. We are satisfied with it.
