How many bags for a 48" diameter round fire pit? Will I need any smaller lava rock to go underneath?
A 48" firepit would require 1.5 bags to cover this area at a thickness of 3". It would be recommended to install lava rock under this material first if the overall depth to cover is over 3" deep.

The stones range in size from 1.5" - 2.5" and do retain some heat. The stones are made of refractory cement material and typically last up to 5 seasons depending on usage and protection from the elements.
