Few things in life are less fun than dealing with an unwanted animal visitor in your home. Unless it's paying for water damage in your chimney, or having a wayward spark from your fireplace catching your roof on fire. Here's the thing, though - chimney caps help prevent all of those problems. Just a simple metal cage, sitting on top of your flue, that keep the rain and animals out, while the wire mesh lets smoke out and keep sparks in. But if you've got a chimney with multiple flues, it should be a bit more complicated, shouldn't it? Not here. This Gelco semi-custom, multi-flue chimney cap is built to take care of exactly your needs. And we mean your needs - semi-custom means that you get to choose the length, height, mesh size and and overhang for yourself. This item comes in widths of 9 inches to 28 inches, and lengths of 9 inches to 58 inches, with a 10 inch mesh height. We also offer this same custom chimney cap with mesh in 8 inch, 12 inch, and 16 inch height to fit almost everyone's needs.

Is the 17"x41" measurement the exact size of the interior of the multi-flue chimney cap with the flanges folded out?

    1 Answer
Those are the measurements of the screen widths.  The flange is 1 1/2 inches wide.

Does this fit over the outside of the chimney? How does it attach to the chimney? Do measurements need to be exact as chimney OD measurements?
    1 Answer
This product mounts to the top of the chimney using masonry screws/anchors.  It is best to take the flange width of 1.25" into consideration when ordering.

Do these come in black and do they rust?
    1 Answer
They are available in galvanized painted black caps.  A painted cap galvanized cap will rust.  If used with a wood-burning appliance, the paint will fail faster.

Where am I supposed to apply the sealant that came with this?
    1 Answer
This is optional for attaching the mounting strips to the crown of the chimney (in addition to the masonry anchors being installed through the pre-drilled holes).

The pictures of these Gelco chimney caps do not show a flange to fasten the unit to the top of the chimney. Do these units come with a flange? Is that what the standard 2-1/2" and optional 4" overhang is?

    1 Answer
Though it is hard to see, there is a mounting strip inside the screens of this cap. The strip can also flip to the outside of the screens if preferred. The 2-1/2" or 4" overhang option refers to the projection of the lid over the screens on each side.

Does the wire mesh keep blowing rain out?
    1 Answer
As with any chimney cap, there is no way to completely seal it to prevent any rain intrusion. For maximum protection on this cap, we would recommend the California mesh option, which is a tighter 5/8-inch mesh screen.

Are measurements for the outside of the screen portion or the top cap?

The dimensions you select on this page are the screen-to-screen size, inside dimensions.  You have the option of selecting a 2.5-inch or 4-inch overhang for the lid in addition to these dimensions.

How does this Multi-flue semi-custom Gelco chimney cap mount to the chimney? Does the top come off so it can be attached to the chimney from the inside flange?
    3 Answers
This cap mounts to the surface of the chimney crown in between the outer diameter of the crown and the outer diameter of the terracotta flue that protrudes from your chimney and the lid can indeed be removed to install the cap with the swing tabs positioned inwards. The cap should be set in position for test fitment first. You should then mark several mounting points on the concrete wash through the perforations. Your mounting points should be evenly spaced and I recommend two anchor points on the long side of the cap and one on the ends. The cap should then be set aside and a hammer drill with a masonry bit should be used to drill into the wash. You can then installed plastic anchors and set the cap back in position over them. You will then need to run anchor screws through the strips and into the anchors you installed.

The top has 4 bolts. One in each corner that can be removed. The flaps are piano hinged and can be folded inside or outside.
Submitted by: Gaetano on November 2, 2015 from NY
Yes, it is shipped without the top attached. You attach it to the chimney using holes in the flange inside and then attach the top using the 4 bolts you can see in the picture.

    from Montreal, CAN asked:

What are the specific mounting details for this Multi-Flue semi-custom Gelco chimney cap? Does this unit mount to the flue stub or to the chimney cap? If this mounts to the chimney cap, how is it removed for chimney cleaning?
    1 Answer
This cap is designed to be mounted to the concrete wash at the top of the chimney, rather than the flue tile itself. You must drill into the concrete and install screws through the metal swingtabs that are attached to the perimeter of the cap. For cleaning, the lid can be quickly removed by unbolting the cap screws that hold it in place.
