Is it appropriate to place a thermometer on stove rather than stove pipe?
1 Answer
Using the thermometer on the stovepipe will give a more accurate reading, as most stove bodies are insulated with firebrick and a heat shield. The insulation of the firebox will usually lead the thermometer to read 100 to 150 degrees lower than what is accurate.

Nice quality. Good magnet
I have a double walled stainless steel stove pipe. The directions say to use a different kind of thermometer where holes are drilled thruogh both walls. Since I do not want to drill these holes, I guess I can use this thermometer at least for comparison of relative heat, if not absolute.

Stove pipe thermometer
This is designed for the stove pipe single wall to be placed 12 inches above outlet. I thought it was for the stove top, but it looks good in the pipe.
