Yes, as seen on the cover of the installation manual here, this can be used with just a screen in place.

Effective, but loud
Overall good quality. Works fairly well to reclaim some heat from the fireplace, noticeably warms the room better than without. Biggest complaint is noise of the included fan. The motor has a higher pitched whine on both low and high settings. Could hardly hear the TV (mounted over fireplace) when fan turned on high, very distracting.
