    Are 250 pounds of mortar required?

    The 250 pounds of mortar is what the manufacturer recommends for the installation of the fireplace components.

    These are wood-burning, right? Just have to add firebrick inside?

    That is correct. The fireplace requires a mortar kit to assemble, plus refractory brick/lining and venting, if the stack needs to be taller than what comes with the fireplace.
