This unit is a dual fuel packaged system, meaning it combines an electric heat pump and a gas furnace within the same outdoor cabinet, eliminating the need for two separate systems. In typical operation, the heat pump runs first for both cooling and heating, as it is the more efficient mode across a range of outdoor temperatures. When outdoor conditions become cold enough for the heat pump to be less effective, the unit automatically switches over, and the gas furnace section takes over heating. This furnace utilizes its 81 percent AFUE gas burner instead of the electric compressor. The changeover point between heat pump heating and gas furnace heating is a setting configured by the installer during setup, based on the local climate.
