How do I determine the appropriate length for a log lighter pipe I need to order?

The log lighter should be centered directly underneath your grate, which should be positioned dead-center in your fireplace. You should have rigid gas fittings connecting to the log lighter while also positioning the log lighter directly under your grate. With this information, you should be able to determine which size log lighter to consider.
