That cap would be fine on that shaped and size flue. It does attach to the clay flue itself. However California requires a tighter mesh pattern (5/8") then that cap has (3/4"). Therefore it is not allowed to be used in the state of California only. There are other caps that will work. Such as Draft King 10 in. x 17 in. Black Painted Galvanized Steel 'California' Single Flue Chimney Cover.
