Does this have a damper?
This unit does not use a damper and is not recommended by the manufacturer. This unit uses baffles and secondary burn tubes to slow the draft and reclaim heat that is typically lost up the chimney.

Can 2 forced air kits be used with one stove?
This appliance is only tested to have 1 forced air kit installed.  Per the manual: Installing the kit on the left side of the fireplace will provide better performances than on the right side.

Puts out great heat

I've had my Stratford II for about a month. I love it. It produces plenty of heat! My primary reason for this purchase is to provide supplemental heating for the house. It is located in a room 12 feet by 20 feet that is open to other rooms with a total area of about 800 square feet. This fireplace heats the entire area to the point that I won't use it unless the outside air temperature is below 40 degrees F. That is with the fan on high but I guess if I turned the fan down the rooms wouldn't be 79 degrees. I guess I need to learn how to use this fireplace in less than frigid weather. I like the automatic mode of the fan so that I never have to turn it on or off. It turns on when the fireplace is hot and turns off when it cools down.. I've learned that if I close the doors while the fire is producing smoke, the glass turns brown. It's easy to clean with cleaners made for this purpose, but if I leave the doors open ever so slightly, the glass doesn't turn brown much, if at all. The doors still overlap each other, there is just a slight gap at the top and bottom of the doors. Yes, a little room air gets sucked up the chimney. I'm getting better at this through experience. Once the fire is glowing red, I can close the doors without the glass turning brown. I just bought a screen that replaces the glass doors but I have not tried it yet. I like the option of having a choice of screen or glass doors. The firebox has only 12 inches of vertical clearance so I only load it with two levels of wood. But the firebox is deep and wide so this is not a problem at all. It has enough capacity. I can't build a towering inferno and that may be a good thing for safety. I'm looking forward to really cold weather to see if can use this fireplace to keep the heating system from having to run at all. I am very happy with my purchase.

Pros

Produces lots of heat. Fan turns itself on and off. Can use a screen instead of glass doors.
