What is the best way to clean cast iron such as this piece? Is it ok to highlight aspects of the design, and what coating should be used? Polyurethane? It is not going in a fireplace, I want it for decorative use.
If you are using this fireback for decorative purposes only, you can indeed seal the detail of the casting with high quality polyurethane. The fireback can be cleaned with a cast iron restoration product that does not have any added pigmentation. We offer stove polishes of various sorts, but they are made to apply a grey or black pigment to the cast iron that they are applied to. You would likely benefit from using a cleaner that is intended for cast iron cookware, as it would not apply any pigmentation.

Not Naked Any More
I'm so used to seeing my fireback now that I've had it inserted into my fireplace for a while and am so happy with it that when I see fireplaces without firebacks, I think they look naked. Where we live we burn a fire at least half the year, and this fireback has held up well. I really like the look of it when the flames reflect off of it. But most importantly it keeps the back wall cool while putting more heat into the room where we need it. It continues to put out the heat even after the fire burns down because it's a very substantial piece of cast iron. I showed it to my neighbor and now he's ordering one too!
