How would you attach this mantel to a stone wall fireplace?
The kit comes with a dovetailed hanger board. You must secure the hanger with tap cons to the stone wall. If the stone is uneven, you may also need to caulk any gaps around the mantel once it has been installed.

I have tile behind the fireplace. Can I just freestand this mantel?
The mantel will need to be anchored to the wall in some way, as it has a front heavy nature. A wall cleat is provided for this purpose, but it would require the use of fasteners to penetrate the tile. Another option would be to utilize a double sided adhesive material, such a 3M Command adhesive strips.

The only issue we had really had nothing to do with the mantle itself. We had to make adjustments to the mantle due to issues with our walls were built, but it still turned out very nicely and s a great improvement to the look of our living room.

New Fireplace
We just purchased a new (to us!) house, and for the first time in many years, we did not have a fireplace - an essential down here in Florida. Since we don't really need much heat, we bought a small direct vent unit to run off bottled propane. One installed, we started the finishing process, and a mantle - we're fairly traditional - was needed. I did a lot of web surfing, and budget was a driving factor. I'm no wood worker, but the thought of building one did cross my mind until I discovered Pearl mantles. The price was less that I think I could have fashioned one from lumber for, and far better looking that what I know I could produce.
Pros
Pearl had one to fit our fireplace perfectly, and in the right style. Finish and assembly was perfect.
Cons
None that we can think of.
