Yes, the trim around the frame will allow the unit to be centered and cover an 8.5" x 10" opening.

How does it stay in place? I have a 10.5" wide by 8" tall opening. Will this door cover the opening?

The outer flange of this product should be able to cover the 10.5" x 8" opening and will need to be secured in place using mortar and/or masonry screws.

The dimensions say 10" W x 8" H. Is this overall dimension or cutout dimension?

The dimensions listed are for the opening in the masonry. The flange on the door will be slightly larger.

I would recommend this item to a friend.
Not as heafty as I thought
I had to get a universal clean out door because I couldn't find the size I needed. The door works but I worry because the metal is thinner than I anticipated and the look seems a bit flimsy (compared to the old door I had). It didn't come with any installation directions but I figured it out. We rarely use the fireplace so it should be fine.
It works with the hole from my old door - I couldn't find any other doors to fit the exact dimensions.
