Customer Q&A with Product Specialists

Thomas C. from NC asked:
I used a two-year-old bucket of Paint and Peel. When I used it before, it came off in large sheets. Now, it's coming off in very small (1/8 inch) pieces. Is there anything I can do to make it come off easier, such as using heat or a chemical?
I used a two-year-old bucket of Paint and Peel. When I used it before, it came off in large sheets. Now, it's coming off in very small (1/8 inch) pieces. Is there anything I can do to make it come off easier, such as using heat or a chemical?
The difference in performance is likely due to two factors: the age of the product and the peeling technique. Neither heat nor a solvent is part of the recommended removal process for ChimneySaver Paint N Peel. First, regarding age: the manufacturer's product data sheet indicates a shelf life of 12 to 18 months in an unopened container. A two-year-old container is beyond this window. Consequently, the film it forms may be weaker and less flexible, causing it to break into small pieces instead of lifting off in large sheets. For optimal results, we recommend using a fresh container. Second, regarding removal technique: the directions do not call for heat or any chemical additives. Paint N Peel is a water-based cleaning poultice that does not require added water or solvent for removal. Allow the coating to dry completely, which typically takes 4 to 12 hours depending on environmental conditions. Then, start at an edge and slowly pull the dry film off at an angle, using both hands. Pulling quickly or tearing the film can cause it to fragment into small pieces, so working slowly from an edge is key to achieving a clean result. For the best peel next time, apply a thick, even coat, about 1/8 to 3/16 inch thick, across the entire surface, including the edges. An even, generous application allows the coating to release uniformly in large sheets once it's dry. You can find the full instructions in the manufacturer's Paint N Peel Product Data Sheet.

Decent Soot Cleaner, But Yellowing & Coverage Issues

This cleaner did a surprisingly good job on the soot, but it really didn't touch the yellowing on my limestone. The product was quite thick, making it difficult to spread evenly, and I definitely didn't get the square footage coverage that was advertised on the container.

Seriously Impressed with ChimneySaver Fireplace Cleaner!

This stuff is a lifesaver! It completely tackled all the soot without affecting the brick color, which was a huge relief. Make sure you apply a few thick coats for the best peeling results.

AMAZINGLY EFFECTIVE - Saved my fireplace!

This chimney cleaner is a game-changer! I applied it thick, just like the other reviewers suggested, and it peeled off so easily after 48 hours. One gallon was just enough for my 1950s fireplace.

Effective but Thicker Application Needed

This cleaner really does the job of removing soot and creosote, but I learned a thinner coat is harder to remove. Make sure to apply a good, thick layer for the best results.
