Choose Your Mesh Type

A chimney cap's metal mesh allows proper airflow while avoiding unwanted pests and debris. Several mesh types are available, with some offering better protection against escaping sparks or curious wildlife. Now, let's take a closer look at your options.

Please Note: Your local codes may require a specific type of mesh, so it's important to always check with local authority bodies before purchasing your chimney cap.

No Mesh: Some caps do not use mesh; instead, they rely on metal walls or cages to prevent wildlife and debris from entering your chimney. Many caps that are designed for high-wind areas do not use metal mesh.

1/2 Inch: This mesh is less common than 3/4 or 5/8 inch mesh but provides the same protection for your chimney. Tighter mesh options more effectively block escaping sparks but are more vulnerable to clogging and icing across the mesh.

3/4 Inch: A common option, 3/4 inch mesh provides adequate wildlife protection with less airflow resistance than tighter mesh types. However, this mesh cannot effectively catch 1/2-inch escaping sparks and may be restricted by your local area codes for this reason.

5/8 Inch: These caps typically cost more than 3/4 inch options but offer greater protection. Your local area codes may require this mesh for its increased ability to catch smaller sparks. This mesh is ideal for dry climates, wooded areas, and homes with wooden shingles.

1 Inch: 1-inch mesh is less common than others but still a great choice for protecting your chimney from debris and animals. Larger mesh helps prevent icing and clogging, but its spark protection may not meet your local code requirements.
