Choosing Pipe Insulation

Today, chimney components, including chimney pipes, offer a wide range of choices. Proper insulation is key to the efficiency of your chimney system, and this article can help you make the right choice. For more helpful tips, check out our Chimney Pipe Buyer's Guide. For now, let's consider your insulation options.

Solid Insulation: Solid insulation is popular for high-efficiency systems thanks to its higher temperature resistance. These systems enhance their efficiency with interior insulation, typically fiberglass or ceramic. This type of insulation is ideal for colder climates and other areas where the chimney pipe could be exposed to the elements.

Air Insulation: Air insulation typically features a galvanized steel exterior wall with a stainless steel interior. With no interior insulation, it relies on circulating air to keep cool. Its heat resistance is lower than that of solid insulation systems, making it ideal for milder climates.

Single Wall/No Insulation: Single-wall installations are less expensive but also less efficient. The outside may become noticeably warmer than that of double-walled or insulated systems. With less heat protection, a single-wall system will need more clearance from the walls and ceiling.
