Product Details
A Top-Lock damper can save you energy because it creates a tighter seal than the usual metal-to-metal damper of most fireplaces. It consists of a stainless steel lid attached to the cast aluminum frame with steel spring wires. It closes tightly with a silicone rubber seal when the fire is not lit. The unit operates because of a 30' cable that passes through the chimney and mounts in the firebox. It also has a safety device that locks the damper open in the case of a chimney fire. The item carries a manufacturer's warranty for all fuels. Top sealing are not recommended for use with gas logs because of the risk of inadvertent carbon monoxide buildup. The dimensions of the damper are 8" W x 13" L and it fits inside flue sizes of 6" x 9" to 9-1/2" x 12-1/2". It has a cross sectional area of 49 square inches.

Can you provide technical drawings for this damper, specifically the outside dimensions of the base plate and top? Does any part of the damper need to be inserted into the flue? My flues are approximately 8x12.5 inches externally and 6.5x10.5 inches internally.
We do not have a separate dimensioned technical drawing for the Lock-Top 8 in. x 13 in. Energy-Saving Chimney Damper in our documentation. The published footprint for the frame that sits on the chimney is 8 inches wide by 13 inches long. This damper is designed to seal flue openings ranging from 6 inches x 9 inches up to 9-1/2 inches x 12-1/2 inches. Your flue's internal dimensions of 6.5 inches x 10.5 inches fall within this range. We do not have a separate published dimension for the stainless steel lid apart from the 8 in. x 13 in. frame footprint. According to the manufacturer's installation instructions, the damper frame sits on top of the chimney opening and is not inserted into the flue. Only the control cable, handle, and mounting hardware are threaded down through the chimney to the firebox.

You can't seal off the flue with a vented gas appliance.

Does the throat damper need to be removed when installing a chimney damper, or can it be left open?
It can be left open if you desire. Typically, these damper caps are meant to replace a malfunctioning or removed damper.

This cap is designed to be fully open or closed. It is also meant to replace a throat damper.
