It claims to be able to be recessed between studs. Doesn't that conflict with the 4" min. side clearance required if studs are 16" centers?

If the heater will be recessed into a wall no greater than 10", the clearance required is zero to the top and sides. This heater is 14 1/8" and designed to fit between studs that are 16" on center.
