is this an insert or a free standing fireplace?

This is designed as a free standing model and to be framed into a combustible enclosure, rather than into an existing fireplace. Some models are able to be vented using flexible liners up an existing chimney but this model is too large to do so.

What functions are done from the remote?

This fireplace features its own full-function remote that can turn the fireplace on and off, control flame height, operate the unit according to a temperature set on the remote and also control the included blower's fan speed. You can see the full list of the RF Transmitter functions on page 49 of the owner's manual.

Will this unit provide heat if power is out? Does this unit come with a remote control?

Yes, this fireplace can operate and generate heat without electricity. However, the blower cannot be used without power. This unit does come with the RF remote control. With it, you can control the flame height and blower speed, as well as control the fireplace with a thermostat. Details on how it works can be found on pages 48 and 49 of the owner's manual.

Review for
Great fireplace it does not disappoint, very classy! We recently remodeled our home and added a large great room /kitchen combo. We purchased this fireplace because we did not want the fireplace to be dwarfed by the size and height of the room. We had it professionally installed as a raised hearth and added a mantle and stone. So it does make a dramatic statement in the corner of the room. Fireplace works very well and does heat the room. Living flame is a "must have" for a direct vent fireplace. It really is realistic looking especially if you purchase the burning embers that stay lit after gas is turned off (about 15 minutes). The unit has a large clean front and an interior light. Unfortunately, the manufacturer does need to tweak the length of the interior electrical cord for mounting purposes. The rheostat for the interior light is in the bottom vent area and has a short cord. The bottom grille has to be lowered to turn it on/off. We turn on unit with remote and forget about it, when we remember the grille is just too hot to lower. So needless to say we really don't use the interior light. Maybe it is an easy fix for someone who knows how to rewire and put on a longer cord, but our fireplace installer could not do that. We wanted it mounted on a wall which was about 5' away from bottom grille. The remote control is a wonderful feature, but does need several improvements. It needs brighter light and brighter numbers so it can be used in a darkened room. Also, it should control light in the fireplace which it does not do. Light is a manual feature.
