Should I Choose Vented or Vent Free Fireplace Logs?

You might think that the vent type of your log set will depend on the vent type of your fireplace. That isn't actually the case! There are a few differences between vented and vent free fireplace logs, so let's break those down to determine which you'd prefer.

Vented: When looking at a vented gas log, you should know they are primarily designed for ambiance and flame presentation. This type of log set may be your best option if you want a simple installation, freedom of log arrangement, and a less intense heating capacity. Another big plus is that they are generally less expensive than their vent free counterparts.

However, it should be noted that these logs will only partially heat a room, use slightly more fuel than vent free logs, and require a chimney or other venting system.

Vent Free: Vent free logs, also known as ventless logs, are very popular in many places. With no requirements for venting, they also have a much better heating output and are much more likely to heat a room fully. If you have a chimney, you must close the chimney damper to avoid all the heat going up and out!

An important thing to remember is that vent free logs are against code in some areas, like California, and heavily restricted in others, such as Massachusetts. It will be up to you to check local codes for any limitations or restrictions. Additionally, vent free logs can produce an odor that some may find unpleasant. An oxygen depletion system (ODS) and a carbon monoxide detector to make sure there is enough oxygen present in the ctor. Most professionals recommend not having a vent free gas log set on for more than 4 hours.
