How does this unit work if your power is out for a few days?
This is directly from the installation manual: To reduce the risk of overheating during a prolonged power outage (more than 10 minutes), the combustion air controls will be closed automatically. If your furnace is equipped with an optional filter, remove the air filter to improve the circulation of air around the combustion chamber of the furnace. Do not load the furnace more than 50 percent of its capacity to prevent the risk of overheating.

David L. from New Castle, PA. asked:
Does the Drolet Heat Commander II Wood Furnace operate with a thermostat to maintain a set temperature? If so, how does it work? For example, does a draft door close to restrict airflow to the fire? Any information would be greatly appreciated. I currently use an old Longwood furnace with a thermostat that holds temperature within 1 degree.

The Heat Commander II furnace features a self-regulated combustion air supply control system. This system utilizes two temperature sensors within the combustion chamber to continuously measure the real-time temperature. Based on these readings, the furnace automatically adjusts the amount of combustion air needed for optimal and efficient burning. When coupled with a thermostat, the furnace intelligently modulates its combustion rate according to the thermostatic demand. If the thermostat calls for heat, the combustion will operate at its maximum burn rate. Conversely, when the thermostat is satisfied, the combustion burn rate will be slowed to its minimum. A third temperature sensor located in the plenum manages the air distribution fan. This fan ensures the necessary heat is distributed through your ducts to meet the thermostat's requirements, while also maintaining a safe operating temperature within the heating system.

Great for high-efficiency homes

We use this to augment the heat in our geothermal/solar home in the Midwest. It works great. Very easy to load and clean. And boy, does it produce the heat.

Pros

If you live where there is a source of firewood, it's a good way to go.

Cons

Some HVAC companies don't want to install these. But you will find somebody.
