If I install the mantle over a field stone surface, how do I fill the gaps between the mantle and the mortar?
To address gaps between the mantle and a field stone surface, you can create a smooth base for the mantle to sit flush against. One method is to apply a thin layer of castable mortar or refractory cement over the field stone and mortar where the mantle will be installed, creating a more even surface for attachment. Alternatively, if the field stone surface allows, you could carefully grind down any particularly uneven areas to create a smoother profile.
