I'm interested in the Empire Medium Spirit Steel Direct Vent Gas Heating Stove (model DVP30MS30FP) in natural gas. My main question is about venting: I have an existing chimney with a 6-inch inner diameter. Could I use this as a chase to run a 5-inch exhaust pipe, or do you have any other suggestions? I cannot remodel the existing chimney because it's finished with decorative rock.
The Empire Medium Spirit Direct Vent Gas Heating Stove is a Direct Vent appliance that requires a specific, factory-matched coaxial vent pipe system, not a standalone exhaust pipe. According to the installation manual for this model, the approved coaxial pipe has an outer diameter of 6 5/8 inches, with a 4-inch inner exhaust flue. This means the full pipe assembly, measuring 6 5/8 inches across, will not fit inside an existing 6-inch interior diameter chimney flue. Furthermore, the diameter of a Direct Vent coaxial system cannot be substituted or reduced. Since remodeling the existing decorative rock chimney is not an option, we recommend having a local NFI certified hearth professional evaluate the space in person. They can determine if an alternate venting path, such as through an exterior wall, a new framed chase, or a modified opening, would be suitable for this stove.
