Can this extended fireplace hood be attached or drilled into the brick of my fireplace, as I'd like to use it to bridge the gap above my fireplace insert?
This is a fixed, snap-on hood and is not designed to be drilled into brick or masonry. To install it, you will remove the metal delete plate on top of the fireplace unit and then snap the hood directly onto the unit. This hood is specifically designed for use with Empire Breckenridge and Vail 36-inch fireplace models and functions as an extension to the existing hood on those units.

What size screw is used to attach this to the Empire fireplace box?
This is a fixed, snap on hood that is compatible for use with many of the Empire manufactured fireboxes. In order to attach the hood, the metal delete plate must be removed from the top of the unit and the hood can be carefully snapped into place. The ends of the hood are beveled and closed in. They taper down gradually at the edges.
