Do all vent-free gas fireplaces require a glass or mesh front?
Vent-free units will require a mesh front or draw mesh screens, depending on the fireplace's model. They will not be able to use a glass front or doors, as they need to have ample air turnover to combust and exhaust through the fireplace's front opening.

What keeps the blower from blowing on the pilot so it doesnt blow away from thermocouple and go out?
The blower is housed in a separate heat exchanger area, and the pilot is in the burn chamber. The air will travel through a channel between the outer wall of the burn chamber and the outer chassis of the fireplace. They are kept separate from one another.
